SYDNEY PARK PROTEST AGAINST WESTCONNEX TREE DESTRUCTION, SAT 6 MAY, 7AM

RESIDENTS will be holding a protest at Sydney Park at the corner Campbell Rd and Euston Rd from 7am on Saturday, when WestCONnex contractors plan to destroy more trees for the St Peters Interchange.

The works are part of WestCONnex’s destruction of over 800 trees in Sydney Park, St Peters and Alexandria to widen roads around the planned interchange. Residents were only advised this week that Campbell Rd would be closed on Saturday to remove these trees.

“There appears to be no end to the Berejiklian government’s destruction of our trees, communities and desperately needed green spaces for WestCONnex, and residents have had enough,” said WestCONnex Action Group spokesperson Pauline Lockie.

“It’s completely unacceptable for the Berejiklian government to continue vandalising our city for WestCONnex, which will end up creating traffic gridlock around Sydney Park – and slugging western Sydney drivers huge tolls to drive straight into this mess.

“That’s why we’ll be there with residents at this protest to call on Premier Berejiklian to halt these destructive works,” said Ms Lockie.

Residents will be joined by Greens MP for Newtown, Ms Jenny Leong, from 8:30am. Lord Mayor Clover Moore has prior engagements, but has expressed her ongoing support for the community’s continued efforts to stop WestCONnex to WAG.
